Gaming Giant Capcom Suffers Security Breach

So far there is no confirmation that any customer data is involved or compromised. Cyber criminals and criminal gangs will always be strongly attracted to gaming and gambling sites. Some users are very vulnerable to phishing and scamming, so even if there is no financial information stolen in a breach, the long term effects of a data breach can include the further abuse or victimisation of a site’s users or customers.

Hopefully the warning from Capcom to its users included telling them to change their passwords and to make sure they do not use the same password on the site as they do for other platforms, as those credentials will almost certainly be tried elsewhere, fraudulently. The most important place for strong password is on an email account that can be used to reset an entire digital life.

It is impossible to be 100% secure 100% of the time but it does seem that on many occasions there may be a supplier vulnerability that has been leveraged to access customer data. It is always worth auditing suppliers to establish their security protocols and measures when your customers can be put at risk. Customers lend us their data to process in confidence, so they need to know wetake our responsibilty for it seriously, regardless of where it is residing or moving. The last thing anyone wants is to do the ‘we take your security very seriously’ press release after a breach.

We suggest to all our clients that they encourage their customers to audit them, with or without ISO27001. The assurance required from supply chain partners is greater than ever and as we continue to interweave our businesses and lives; strengthening connections in cyberspace, so the responsibility deepens.

If you want help with Data Protection, ISO27001, auditing or supply chain assurance, we can help. We can help a little or a lot but we will do it independently and we don’t sell anything else.
